We only discovered Bud’s a couple years ago. After a food filled trip to New Orleans, my wife and I were eager to find a Louisiana style restaurant right here in San Diego. And what do you know? Bud’s cafe was just up the street in Tierrasanta. We quickly discovered their fabulous jalepeno corn bread muffins. The muffins are crisp on the outside, sweet and moist on the inside, and accented with a hint of spice to kick things up a notch! Don’t be deceived though, the peppers are really mild. It is always well worth the $.50 price of admission to partake in one of these choice morsels. Trust me, after you get it the first time, you’ll be hooked!
Equally as tasty are their red beans and rice. For the uninitiated, they slow cook the beans by starting with some sort of salted meat. This gets infused into the beans along with a complex, but satisfying smoke flavor as well. Three pieces of Andouille sausage top off the cleverly simple, but delicious dish. I could literally eat the cornbread and red beans and rice and be a very satisfied individual! (Did I mention, I don’t typically like any kind of beans?)
Since our friends were in town this past holiday weekend, we decided to visit Bud’s cafe. They have since relocated from Tierrasanta to a small office park (on Viewridge road) just off of Balboa and the 15 freeway. It’s a quiet and unassuming location, but the food was every bit as good as the times before. I decided to try their roast beef po-boy sandwich. It was combined with some delicious fries and the roast beef sandwich was smothered in gravy. The sandwich was great, although it was a touch salty.
My wife got the fried oysters which apparently are amazing. Being that I’m not a huge fan, I can’t comment only to say that she loved the corn meal crunch on the outside.
Our friends really loved Bud’s this past weekend. Service is always great and they consistently serve wonderful cajun-style cuisine. I can’t wait to go back again.
